Quartz is our primary countertop option at Rockbridge Flooring & More (but not the only option). We are often asked about cleanability – what’s good to use and not so good to use. For the answers, we went straight to a few of our key manufacturers. Use this as a reference for cleaning your quartz countertops.

The obvious thing to do is to clean spills as they happen to prevent staining, but for those living in a busy household, spills may occur and go unnoticed for a period of time.

Problem: Condensation from my drinking glass left a water ring on my countertop.

Solution 1: Mix warm water and baking soda. Apply the mixture to the countertop with a soft sponge, wiping in a circular motion. For a more stubborn water ring, apply the mixture to the countertop and cover it with plastic wrap. According to MSI Surfaces, “this will create heat that pulls the stain out of your quartz countertops. At this point, you should have the original polished finish back.”

Solution 2: Caesarstone recommends another common household combination: white vinegar and water. “The acidic property of vinegar makes it ideal for breaking down all stains,” but be sure your mixture is equal parts vinegar and water. Use a soft cloth to clean the area with the mixture. If it’s a stubborn stain, let it soak overnight.

Problem: I spilled spaghetti sauce, nail polish, or other significantly staining material on my countertop.

Solution: Use a non-abrasive liquid cleaner and a white Scotch Brite pad or Magic Eraser to clean the area in a circular motion. Do not use acetone, paint stripper, or any other harsh chemical as that will damage and potentially discolor your countertop.

Daltile offers a word of caution about exposing your quartz countertops, suggesting homeowners avoid “chemicals and solvents, especially paint removers or furniture strippers containing trichlorethane or methylene chloride.” Avoid high pH cleaning agents.

Both MSI and Caesarstone recommend Bar Keeper’s Friend Soft Cleanser liquid for cleaning a quartz countertop.
